CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Last minute shoppers are having to shop elsewhere for their Easter Sunday food items as the Stop & Shop strike continues.

This Easter holiday, people have turned to local grocery stores to meet their family shopping needs.

Unionized Stop & Shop workers have been on strike for 10 days now in what’s become the longest strike in Stop & Shop history. The popular supermarket chain remains open but with limited services.

Though many shoppers have expressed frustrations over the strike, there are local shoppers who support Stop & Shop workers. One Leeds man told 22News, he made sure to do his Easter shopping earlier in the week to avoid long lines at other supermarkets like the Big Y.

“I’m fairly certain Stop & Shop can afford to take care of their employees. They really should,” Lamb said. “Stop & Shop’s been a staple of New England for my entire life. I’m 42-years-old. Tell me Stop & Shop can’t help its employees, c’mon.”

Stop & Shop released a statement Saturday afternoon saying, “Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island will be open from 8 a.m. until noon on Easter Sunday,” but that “bakery, customer deli, and seafood counters will not be operational.”

Negotiations continue but there’s no sign that the Stop & Shop strike is ending anytime soon.
