SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – An East Longmeadow Middle School principal is paying it forward after suffering a massive heart attack this summer.
Birchland Park Middle School Principal Timothy Allen was joined by the Basketball Hall of Fame President John Deleva to donate six AED machines to Springfield Public Schools. They were paid for with money raised by the Timmy Strong Foundation.
Timmy Allen suffered a massive heart attack earlier this summer, the #TimmyStrong campaign promotes heart health, CPR education and placement of life-saving AED’s. A benefit concert this summer raised money for two AED’s to be placed in local schools.
Since then, donations to the campaign have raised enough money for four more. A ceremony took place at 3 p.m. with Principal Timmy Allen, CEO Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame John Doleva, Executive Director of Baystate Academy Charter Public School Tim Sneed, Director of Athletics at Springfield Public Schools Dwayne Early and other invited guests.
Principal Allen promised to use the left over money to help the community and promote heart health, “It was CPR that saved me in the beginning and it was an AED that arrived on scene that helped saved me as well. So I just think it’s so important and it’s such a fine line between having this stuff ready to go and not, so the first step is having it.”
At least two of the AED’s will be used in schools. The others will placed with athletic trainers who can use them on the road.
