Try to imagine a child sleeping on the floor for lack of a bed.

That shocking condition has given rise to an initiative called “A Bed For Every Child.”

Freedom Credit Union and the Pioneer Valley Chapter of Credit Unions worked with the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless to provide beds for local children in need.

22News was there as a truck filled with 30 children’s beds awaited families at Springfield’s Operations Center on Tapley Street Wednesday. Many in need are Puerto Rican survivors from last year’s Hurricane Maria.

“It means everything because a lot of these families did not come with anything more than their personal belongings, their suitcases,” said Stephanie Sanabria, of the Springfield School Department. “So for them to receive a bed for their child to get ready to learn and thrive in school is essential.”

The goal of the Credit Union funded program is to provide a bed for every child living in poverty here in Western Massachusetts.
