Local non-profit helps seniors at a Springfield high school with prom & graduation expenses

A group of high school students in Springfield got the surprise of a lifetime Thursday morning!

Seniors at the Springfield High School of Science and Technology found out their prom and graduation expenses were going to be covered thanks to one of their professors.

Teacher Stefan Davis, or coach as the students call him, is also the President of ‘I Found Light Against All Odds,’ a Springfield based non-profit that serves at-risk youth.

Thursday morning he and his board presented a check for $1,000 to a group of seniors with moderate disabilities at Sci-Tech.

Davis told 22News the idea came together after asking the students what they’d like to become and they responded “normal.”

“That touched me and it touched my students. They said coach you have an organization why don’t you help give back? They want to feel normal? Pay for their cap and gown and for them to go to prom,” said Davis.

“They’re shocked! I’ve actually had a parent ask my if their student can go to prom. They’ll just be so surprised to know everything is paid for,” said special education teacher Elizabeth Mercieri.

Mercieri said that all seven seniors in her program will now get caps and gowns and tickets to prom.
