It was smiles from ear to ear for students at the Martin Luther King Jr Charter school of Excellence in Springfield, as they were sent off to class with words of encouragement Thursday morning.
The Black Men of Greater Springfield Inc. welcomed more than 350 students back to school with high fives and hand shakes, all while wishing them a good day.
And it wasn’t just the childrens days that were made by this gesture.
This is the first year the organization has partnered with the MLK Charter School.. and today was all about setting the right tone for a successful school year.
The organization strives to provide positive experiences and activities for youth. Something one parent told 22News they enjoy seeing.
“I love it, I love that they shake hands in the morning.. good morning.. that’s respect,” said Kayla Messler. “Some schools don’t do that at all.”
Black Men of Greater Springfield focus on exposing students to successful African-American role models, emphasizing the ability to become contributing members of the community.
” It means the world to us that they would take the time to greet our students, to welcome them to a new year and to let them know that we’re expecting great things from them,” said Executive Director, Dr. Calvin McFadden. ” And to offer the character building assessments that we believe are important for them to be successful in life.”
McFadden said he hopes this visit is the first of many..
