Students of Blueberry Hill Elementary School in Longmeadow participated in Massachusetts Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day.
Longmeadow police officers began doing this “walking school bus” with students in October.. as a way to teach them rules of the road.
With nice weather, comes more bike rides to school and Sergeant Mazzaferro with the Longmeadow Police Department told 22News one of the main goals of this program is to teach students about safety.
“We discuss crossing the streets, we have 23 crossing guards in locations in town for the kids part of our Safe Routes program,” said Sergeant Mazzaferro. “Streets that we don’t have crossing guards which we did cross a few of those today, we encourage the kids to stop look both ways and then continue.”
One parent told 22New he likes that this event gives his child the chance to bond with officers in their town.
“It’s just great to see them out here engaging with the kids, especially at this age just to try to get some trust and just to really get to know the officers in town,” said Jeremy Randall.
Sergeant Mazzaferro said they’ll do one more walking school bus before the academic years ends.
