HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Lower Westfield Road in Holyoke was closed shortly after 9:00 o’clock Tuesday night after an electrical transformer caught fire and may have exploded.

Lower Westfield Road was closed from the ramps that lead to I-91 to. It’s before you get to the mall, by the Holyoke Crossing shopping plaza.

Holyoke Police Sgt. Kevin Thomas told 22News an electrical transformer on a pole caught fire a caused some power outages. It’s not clear exactly how many homes or businesses were affected.

An electrical wire fell onto the road, and it wasn’t certain if it was live with electricity. The fire department and the Holyoke gas and electric company were called to handle the situation.
