SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A Holyoke man was arrested Wednesday morning after he allegedly shot and killed a Springfield man Tuesday night.
Springfield Police Spokesman Ryan Walsh told 22News, the Springfield Police Department Homicide Unit was granted an arrest warrant for 20-year-old Edwin Hernandez at 2 a.m Wednesday.
Hampden County DA, Anthony Gulluni, identified the victim as 19-year-old Isaiah Ramos of Springfield
Walsh said around 9 a.m. Springfield Police, Holyoke Police and the Hampden County Sheriffs Department arrested Hernandez at the Holyoke Police Department on Appleton Street.
Hernandez is being charged with murder, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building and carrying a firearm without a license.
He was arraigned in Springfield District Court Wednesday afternoon where he entered a not-guilty plea.
According to Walsh, Ramos was found after police were called to a ShotSpotter activation at the intersection of Liberty and Genesee Streets at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he died of his injuries late Tuesday night.
The shooting was not a random act, according to Walsh.
Springfield police and the Hampden County DA are looking into what led up to the shooting. Hernandez will be in court next on July 12.
