The Massachusetts Blue Ribbon Calf sale is being held at the Mallory Complex at the Big E Saturday. Proceeds from the annual event go to the Massachusetts 4H dairy program.
To get ready for the auction, kids from a number of different states were getting the calves ready to show.
Children from all over New England, New York, and Pennsylvania are participating in several clinics to learn more about the proper care and preparation of the cattle. Many of them want to pursue careers in the dairy industry.
They spent the day caring for the cattle but feeding them, cleaning them, and walking them to prepare for the auction.
For many of the kids at the event, the dairy industry is a family legacy they want to carry on.
“It’s a family tradition I think it’s important to help out the agricultural industry and just keep the roots where they are from,” said Sarah Jordan of Rutland, Massachusetts.
The 65 calves will be auctioned to new homes, mostly to the kids that attended the event Friday.
Massachusetts Blue Ribbon Calf sale is in its 16th year.
