Massachusetts' budget 10 days overdue

BOSTON (WWLP) - Massachusetts is now the last state in the country still without a budget in place for fiscal 2019.

A conference committee, made up of four Democrats and two Republicans, is responsible for coming up with a consensus budget.

But, there's no indication a compromise is close to in $41.5 billion spending plan.

House Speaker Robert DeLeo is putting on the pressure. He said, "It's imperative that we do a budget and we do a budget immediately."

The Legislature has never been this late producing a final budget in DeLeo's 10-years as speaker.

Senate President Harriette Chandler said she agreed with DeLeo's urgency, but not his suggestion to strip policy proposals from the spending bill.

Chandler said the legislature could probably get through more than just the revenue part.

There are just 21 days left until the end of the current legislative session.

Negotiators need to get a budget to Governor Charlie Baker's desk with enough time for him to review it.

Once Baker receives the final budget, he has 10 days to complete his review and, if he feels the need, use his line-item veto powers.
