UNION, Conn. (AP) — A 17-year-old boy from central Massachusetts has died while swimming in a Connecticut lake.

Department of Energy and Environmental Protection officials say the teen, who is from Southbridge, was swimming in Mashapaug Lake at Bigelow Hollow State Park in Union when he went under the water just before 4 p.m. Sunday and never resurfaced.

His body was found by state environmental police and the Tolland County dive team responding to reports of a possible drowning.

CPR was administered to the teen before he was taken to Harrington Hospital in Southbridge, where he died. No name was released.

Officials say the ponds at the state park are not designated swimming areas and no lifeguard was present.
