Agreement between MGM, NBA could have impact on sports betting in Massachusetts

Massachusetts

MGM International and the NBA announced a new multi-year partnership making MGM Resorts the official gaming partner of the NBA and WNBA.

Springfield residents told 22News that this agreement could have an impact in the long term.

The partnership is the NBA’s first with a sports betting operator in the U.S. and is the first of its kind between MGM Resorts and a major professional sports league.

Pennsylvania is one of the states where sports betting is legal. 22News spoke with Raymond Ayer, a resident of Pennsylvania traveling through Springfield.

He said with MGM having a location in Springfield, the partnership with the NBA could be a step closer to legalizing sports betting in Massachusetts.

“The option should be out there for other people,” Ayer said. “I don’t have a problem with it. I think everyone should have a right to make their own choices.”

Rep. Joe Wagner says he is working on developing a plan to legalize sports betting for the 2019-2020 session.
