Baker takes heat from Gonzalez over public safety officials

Massachusetts

Governor Baker’s Democratic challenger Jay Gonzalez stood on the statehouse steps Wednesday, calling on Governor Baker to fire Public Safety Secretary, Daniel Bennett and State Police Colonel Kerry Gilpin.

Gonzalez’s demands come after dozens of state police officers have been implicated in an overtime pay scandal, and just last week, three Massachusetts State Police lieutenants were indicted on charges of larceny and fraud.

Gonzalez called out state police Colonel Kerry Gilpin for knowing about the overtime abuse and doing nothing about it.

22News made several calls to Governor baker’s Office for a response to Gonzales’ Statements.

We received a statement from Baker’s campaign saying the governor is proud of his administration’s record of reforming long-standing problems at the State Police, and they will continue to expand the internal investigations.

In that statement released to 22News, Baker said fellow democrats have called Gonzalez’s latest attack ‘political nonsense.’
