Brush fire season underway in western Massachusetts

Firefighters in Blandford, Russell, and Otis worked to put out an uncontrolled brush fire in Blandford Tuesday afternoon.

In Northampton, the fire department posted photos on Tuesday, of a shed that burned to the ground after a neighbor was illegally burning according to the fire department’s Facebook page.

The West Springfield Fire Department said certain days carry a higher risk for brush fires.

“Late March to around mid-May, you see the vegetation dry out,” Michael Dickson told 22News. “Especially with the winds like this, and you’re getting some of the days are warming up, it’s sort of a perfect storm for brush fires.”

The West Springfield Fire Department said open burning is banned in the city and can result in a $500 fine.
