Latino organizations from across Massachusetts meet up in Holyoke

Massachusetts

Local Latino organizations and education leaders met Wednesday night to discuss the challenges faced by Latino students.

Members of Latinos for Education, Amplify Latinx and the Greater Boston Latino Network gathered at the Morgan School in Holyoke to host a Town Hall with local education advocates.

Commissioner of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Jeff Riley spoke at Wednesday night’s meeting.

Holyoke Public Schools superintendent told 22News the event was intended to help build community support and address the students’ needs.

“It’s an opportunity for them to learn from different parts of the state about what’s working, what’s not working,” said Dr. Stephens Zrike Jr., superintendent, and receiver of Holyoke Public Schools. “There are still significant disparities in the performance of Latino students and white students in the state. “

This was the second of three town hall meetings held in the state this month.

The final will be held in Somerville on October 10.
