Nonprofit organizations across Massachusetts were honored at the State House in Boston today.
Dozens of the state’s nonprofits and business leaders gathered at the Great Hall to celebrate Nonprofit Awareness Day.
Six nonprofit organizations were specifically recognized for their innovative and effective work.
The celebration is hosted by the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network, a statewide organization that works to strengthen the nonprofit community. The network has more than 700 members across the state.
“These are organizations that all care about inclusion,” MA Nonprofit Network Chairperson Jim Ayers told 22News. “They care about reaching out to people from all backgrounds and bringing them together, and we believe again that makes our community a stronger place.”
Brooke Mead, who works at the Berkshire Immigrant Center, said that “It’s hard and very rewarding work. So to be able to be recognized for it is just the icing on the cake.”
The nonprofit sector employs nearly 17 percent of the workforce in Massachusetts.
The statewide holiday was created in 2008.
