Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren announced on Monday that she is forming an exploratory committee to run for president in 2020.
Warren released a campaign video and sent an e-mail to supporters saying she would announce a formal plan for her campaign early in the new year. In making her move so early, Warren becomes the first major Democratic candidate to make this crucial first step in the campaign.
Political consultant Tony Cignoli told 22News that Warren made the right choice in getting a jump over possible rivals for the nomination.
“She takes away some of those activists and players who may have been thinking of Bernie Sanders or Kamala Harris or Corey Booker,” Cignoli explained. “[It’s a] smart move on her part to do this.”
Cignoli says that Warren’s announcement doesn’t come as much of a surprise as she has been putting resources into key campaign states over the past year.
