Shoppers expected to take advantage of final day of sales tax holiday

Massachusetts

Sunday is the last day of a tax free weekend in Massachusetts.

Bob’s Discount Furniture in West Springfield is one of the places where people will looking to save money on couches, mattresses and other items on the last day of the tax free weekend.

Shoppers won’t have to pay the 6.25 percent sales tax on purchases under $2,500.

That results in up to $150 in savings on a $2,500 item.

22News shot video shoppers taking advantage of the tax holiday on Saturday in Chicopee and West Springfield.

One shopper told 22News the tax holiday gives him a chance to buy more expensive items.

“Lawn mower, futon, mattress, if I see a television I might get that too. I’m trying to get everything big that I wouldn’t be able to get before,” said Springfield resident Toren Hill.

This weekend marks the first tax free weekend in Massachusetts in three years.

Under legislation signed last month, Massachusetts will have a tax free weekend every August, starting in 2019.
