Shoppers taking advantage of tax-free purchases during the weekend

Massachusetts

Sunday is the last day for people in Massachusetts to take advantage of the tax free weekend.

Shoppers won’t have to pay the 6.25-percent sales tax on purchases under $2,500. That results in up to $150 in savings on a $2,500 item.

22News went to Manny’s TV and Appliances in Westfield and Bob’s Discount Furniture in West Springfield, to see how shoppers were taking advantage of there being no sales tax.

Radames Lopez from Westfield said, “I walked in and found a real good price on mattresses, which I was shopping for, and other types of furniture I saw. I think they have good prices, I was able to save a lot.”

Manny’s TV and Appliances manager Patrick Barrett told 22News he’s seen an increase in business since early this week. He said customers were pre-selecting items leading up to this weekend. “It’s great for the consumer, it’s great for business, it just really drives the economy. It’s just great all around.”

Under legislation signed last month, Massachusetts will have a tax free weekend every August, starting in 2019.
