CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – 22News aired the second debate between candidates seeking the Democratic Party nomination for United States Congress from Massachusetts’ First Congressional District, incumbent Richard Neal (D-1^st) and Mayor Alex Morse of Holyoke, MA. 

It was another highly anticipated exchange between the two for one hour.

Both Morse and Neal have exchanged heated rebuttals throughout their campaigns, and Thursday night was no different. The debate began with both candidates addressing the recent controversy surrounding Mayor Morse, who is asking his community to come to their own conclusions about the allegations.

Neal made it clear that there is “no room for homophobia” in this race to Washington. Some other talking points included inequality in healthcare, to the Cares Act, and how each candidate would assist the people in the 1st Congressional District.

It’s also important to note that there isn’t a Republican currently running in the congressional race.
So, whichever candidate wins the Democratic primary being held on September 1, will likely be headed directly to Congress.

The debate started on Thursday, August 20, 2020, at 8 p.m. at the 22News studios in Chicopee, MA. 22News Anchor Rich Tettemer served as the moderator.

Massachusetts’ First Congressional District includes all of Berkshire County and parts of Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, and Worcester counties. Representatives to the U.S. Congress are elected for two-year terms. 

The Massachusetts Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2020.
