Woman killed after head-on collision with police cruiser

Massachusetts

SOMERSET, Mass (WPRI) — A woman driving a sedan has died following a crash with a Somerset police cruiser.

This happened just before 1 a.m. Friday on Route 138, at the intersection of Westhill and Riverside Avenues in Somerset.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s office has identified the victim as 20-year-old Hailey Allard, of Somerset. Eyewitness News has confirmed she is a student at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

She was taken to Charlton Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Officials closed off a portion of the road after the crash.

Somerset Police told Eyewitness News that the officer involved in the crash is expected to be ok. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he was treated and released.

According to police, that officer was responding to reports of someone trying to break into a truck when the crash happened.

Both the cruiser and the sedan sustained heavy front-end damage.

It appears the cruiser crashed into a telephone pole, snapping it in two.

National Grid was on scene to cut power to that portion of the street.
