WPI researchers get $3.3M grant to test algebra game

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts professor has received a $3.3 million grant to study whether a computer-based game that’s supposed to teaching kids algebra really works.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute Professor Erin Ottmar tells The Telegram & Gazette that the WPI-developed game called “From Here to There!” has been in development for the last six years. Preliminary evidence suggests the game helps.

Their goal is to produce sufficient evidence the game actually does help users better grasp mathematical thinking and processes.

Her research team will first conduct pilot testing of the game locally before launching a large-scale study with students in Texas. They will then evaluate the results of those tests, using not only the students’ standardized test scores but also their performance in the game itself.
