LUDLOW, Mass. (WWLP) – Coffee for holiday travelers isn’t unusual. This weekend the Massachusetts DOT will provide drivers on the turnpike FREE coffee to help prevent them from dozing off behind the wheel.

At Westbound turnpike service area, travelers welcomed the gesture by DOT to provide them with free coffee from 10pm Saturday to 5am Sunday morning.

Shannon Sumner from Bethel, Alaska was making her first trip on the pike, while in route to Tanglewood, she told 22news.

“What a great idea, I’m thrilled to know this is going to be available to me. I’m just happy to be driving a car to tell you the truth, where I’m from we don’t have any roads.”

As the fourth of July begins here in western Massachusetts, state police say the number of travelers stopping at the service area was much heavier than usual. If you get sleepy while driving this weekend, stop at the nearest turnpike service area for a cup of joe.
