SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The MassMutual insurance company is in the midst of layoffs.

Employees 22News spoke with said many are on edge, because they don’t know who will be let go next. New employees to people who have been there for ten years are being let go or given a severance package.

MassMutual had employed about 7,200 people locally.

MassMutual spokesman Jim Lacey wouldn’t say how many people are being laid off, but did say that any staff reductions would take place across the organization, including at their headquarters in Springfield and at their offices in Enfield, Connecticut.

22News spoke with one woman who was let go in Springfield on Monday. She did not want to be named, but told 22News, “I think everyone is just waiting, and I unfortunately…everyone has been on pins and needles, so unfortunately I don’t know how much work is getting done this week, or last week for that matter.”

The Enfield offices deal more with retirement plans, and in Springfield it’s more life insurance.

22News spoke with local career centers in Springfield, who said they have received no notification of mass layoffs.
