WILBRAHAM, Mass (WWLP) – Sunday’s storms caused widespread power outages, but National Grid customers are having far more problems than Eversource customers.
Among the hardest hit communities, are East Longmeadow and Wilbraham where thousands of residents are in the dark.
No traffic lights caused concern for drivers, banks were closed, gas stations couldn’t pump gas, restaurants were closed and so were schools.
National Grid spokesman Robert Kievra told 22News a tree fell on a main high voltage transmission line. A helicopter surveyed the damage and he described restoration and repairs as a multi-day effort.
“I was fine until I came here to Stop & Shop to go shopping,” Donna hill, of Springfield, said. “They have no power so I can’t get the perishables I was going to get so I have to either go somewhere else or wait until a later date.”
National Grid says the wind was stronger than expected, but they were fully staffed and have crews working around the clock to restore power at hospitals, nursing homes, and other places of priority before branching out to other areas.
