Neighbors in shock after police discover body on Maple Street in Springfield

News

Police in Springfield are investigating the city’s second homicide in the last several days.

22News went back to 303 Maple Street Friday night, where we found candles burning, balloons, and a board with messages of condolence. A few people were coming and going holding a quiet vigil for their lost neighbor.

Springfield police spokesman Ryan Walsh said a man was found dead under a car in the parking lot of “The Maples” apartment complex around 6:00 Friday morning.

One resident of the apartment building who asked not to be shown on camera said he’s never seen anything like this in the year he’s lived there.

“That’s telling me I need to get out of here, cause I don’t want to be living in no dangerous place,” said Jose of Springfield. “I lived here a year and some change, but nothing like this has happened yet. This is strange to me, shocking.”

The homicide investigation comes only two days after the shooting death of a 20-year-old man on Knox Street.
