AMHERST, Mass (WWLP) – The University of Massachusetts introduced the new men’s basketball coach Frank Martin during a news conference Tuesday morning.

UMass director of athletics, Ryan Bamford first announced UMass’s new men’s basketball coach, Frank Martin on Friday.

Coach Martin will bring with him plenty of experience. Frank Martin was a former coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks team for 15 years and 10 seasons. He led the Gamecocks team into victory in 2017 at the NCAA, giving them their first win since 1973.

Before that five seasons at Kansas State University. When he addresses the crowd, Martin expressed he will be pushing his athletes on the court and in the classroom. Prior to his college coaching career Martin was a teacher.

At Monday’s news conference, Martin said, “I was a math teacher. I am a teacher at my core. Academics is where it starts for me. Our players will be in class, our players will go to class. Our players will excel academically.”

The last time UMass appeared in the NCAA basketball tournament was 2014. The NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball season begins November 8th.
