NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Firefighters in Northampton put out a fire at a vacant storefront on Center Street early Wednesday morning.
Northampton Deputy Fire Chief Stephen Vanasse told 22News crews were called in around 1:30 a.m. for a fire alarm. He said it then turned into a report of a “structure fire” after police officers who happened to be nearby reported flames at the location.
Deputy Chief Vanasse said the officers had been in the area for an unrelated incident when they heard the fire alarm going off. After finding the fire, they reportedly used fire extinguishers to keep the flames at bay before crews arrived and put out what was left
Deputy Chief Vanasse said the fire caused minimal damage to the building. He said people at a nightclub next door and those living above the storefront were able to evacuate safely and return afterwards.
No injuries were reported.
The Northampton Police department, Northampton Fire Rescue, and the State Fire Marshal are now investigating.
