Not guilty pleas for 2 charged in Amherst murder

BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (WWLP) – Two men who were arrested in Arizona for the October killing of a man at an Amherst apartment complex are back in western Massachusetts, and were arraigned in court Friday afternoon.

About 30 people showed up to witness the arraignment of Soknang Chham and Soksot Chham at Eastern Hampshire District Court in Belchertown. Three people had to be escorted out of the building after shouting profanity upon seeing Soknang Chham.

Soknang is being charged with a single count of murder, while Soksot is charged with being an accessory after the fact. Both men are residents of the Franklin County town of New Salem.

Soknang was ordered held without the right to bail, and will remain at the Hampshire County Jail in Northampton. Soksot, meanwhile, was ordered held on $250,000 bail, and will be housed at the Franklin County Jail in Greenfield. They are both due back in court on January 25.

Mary Carey, spokesperson for the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, told 22News the Chhams were taken into custody on a warrant from U.S. Marshals near Flagstaff, Arizona, after they received word the two had left the commonwealth on a bus to Phoenix.

Another man was seriously wounded in the shooting at the Southpoint Apartments where Rodriguez was killed.
