Police reminding drivers to be alert with school back in session

News

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Many students are waking up for their first day of school this morning, and police want you to help keep them safe.

More than ever before, it’s easy for drivers to become distracted behind the wheel. Police are reminding you to pay close attention to the roads, and look for signs in school zones.

With school back in session for many students across western Massachusetts, drivers will see an increase in both pedestrians and cyclists.

Local police are reminding drivers to pay attention to increased foot traffic and to stop for school buses and crossing guards. When driving through a school zone, drivers should also pay attention to the posted speed limit and yield at all cross walks.

The National Safety Council says the area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children. Drivers should stop with enough room in front of them to give children a safe exit space.

And when sharing the roads with bicyclists. Allow three feet between your car and their bike.
