Backlash is mounting over the Trump administration’s directive to separate migrant parents from their children at the border.
People across the country held Father’s Day rallies Sunday to protest against tent cities being set up to house those children.
The detention of children apart from their parents is a result of the “zero tolerance” policy mandated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has said the intent is to eventually prosecute everyone who crosses the border illegally.
There is no law that requires family separation, and congressional action is not necessary to stop it.
President Trump is facing critics from his own party over the policy that has separated nearly 2,000 kids from their parents since April.
The president will address those opponents in a meeting with Congressional Republicans Tuesday.
