Nielsen out as Homeland Security Secretary

(NBC News) Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has resigned amid growing frustration by the Trump administration over the number of southern border crossings.

 The move brings an end to Nielsen’s often controversial leadership of the department. 

 President Trump announced on Twitter Sunday that U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan would be taking over Nielsen’s spot. 

 McAleenan is a longtime border official who is well-respected by members of Congress and within the administration.
