Senate offers sharp rebuke of Trump

Political News

Twelve members of the president’s own party joined Democrats Thursday to denounce what they consider a “power grab”…President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency to pay for the border wall after Congress refused to fund the project.

“This is not about the President or border security,” Senator Mitt Romney said, adding “This is a constitutional issue.”

The constitution says Congress, not the president, decides how to spend tax dollars.

Some Republicans are concerned it sets a bad precedent and could backfire on them.

“Already Democratic presidential candidates are saying they would declare emergencies to tear down the existing border wall, to take away guns,” warned Senator Lamar Alexander.

The block from Congress will force Mr. Trump’s first presidential veto.

 Still, Democrats are hopeful.

“My hope is that Republicans now see how this President is trampling on the constitution, and understand that it is possible, in fact courageous, to stand up to him,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
