President Donald Trump is calling for the immediate deportation of migrants arriving at the U.S. border.
Early Monday the president tweeted: “When somebody comes in we must immediately, with no judges or court cases, bring them back from where they came.”
Immigration advocates say that’s illegal.
“People coming to claim asylum are not illegal immigrants,” notes Maine’s Senator Angus King.
Immigrants seeking asylum are currently being detained, and despite President Trump ordering an end to family separation, the government says more than 2,000 children remain separated from their parents.
Congress hopes to vote on on a bill that would end that practice this week, but have been unable to agree on a bigger solution to protect dreamers and build a border wall.
