Newly-released audio from inside a Texas detention facility is fueling outrage and putting the Trump administration on defense about separating migrant children from their parents.
The recording reveals distraught children whaling for their parents after being separated from their families and locked behind chained fence walls near the border.
The audio was first reported by ProPublica. A copy was provided to NBC News by civil rights attorney Jennifer Harbury. According to Harbury, the audio was recorded by a client who gave it to her. The client fears retaliation, and is remaining anonymous. The recording has not been independently verified by NBC News.
President Donald Trump is putting the burden on Congress to end the policy, even though the administration could stop the practice at any moment.
The president will address the immigration debate during a meeting with House Republicans on Capitol Hill Tuesday.
