NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Keeping trash and recycling truck drivers safe is the goal of a bill filed by State Rep. James Arciero. The bill would create a safe zone that would make it illegal for drivers to pass a garbage truck at more than 15 mph on town roads.
These slow down to get around laws have already been passed in 10 states and it’s being considered right now in Connecticut. People like Northampton resident Tom Sodlawski told 22News that they’d be in favor of the law, and even expanding it.
“I think it’s very similar to what we have in terms of the school buses,” he said. “Much of it is common sense in terms of how we should behave on the roads. It should also include the postal employees, the delivery drivers, the media and the farm tractors.” The bill would not apply on roads with a center line or more than two lanes.
