SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – People love being outdoors in the summertime, but it’s a good idea to take steps to minimize the sun’s damage to your skin.

Springfield physician Dr. Ira Helfand said people tend to spend too much time in the sun.

Helfand told 22News, some people just don’t use common sense in the sun.

“I’ve already seen a couple of very bad sunburns, so far this year and I’ve already seen a couple of people with skin cancer, so far this summer. Which they didn’t get this summer. They got from sun exposure over the years.”

Dr Helfand said he can’t stress the importance of wearing sunscreen. He also says, avoid the sun’s strongest rays during the afternoon.
