Real time traffic signs installed across Massachusetts

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – MassDOT has been installing new real time traffic information signs across the state.

The Go Time Intelligent Transportation signs are placed in areas where there can be high traffic and have been installed over the last several years.

One sign has been placed going southbound by exit 18 in Northampton. It shows drivers the time it will take from the point they are at to several miles down the highway or to a major city or destination.

At the same time, the system will anonymously track Bluetooth technology carried by drivers, measuring speeds and travel times.

Jeff Corder of Springfield told 22News, “Good idea. It’s kind of nice to know what the traffic is like, but usually if I see something that is going to take longer than I think, I’ll try to take another route, so that kind of helps.”

Federal legislation required states to provide the real time traffic information to the public. The signs are expected to be active before the end of the year.
