(NBC News) After several days of missteps, Donald Trump is trying to get his presidential campaign back on track Thursday, with supporters hoping he can avoid controversial topics and focus more on defeating Hillary Clinton.

As poll numbers sink and Trump battles some prominent members of his own party like Speaker Paul Ryan, there is talk of a possible intervention from fellow Republicans.

Still, some key Republicans rallied behind him Thursday, including Ryan himself who said he continues to support Trump’s election.

New polls show Hillary Clinton stretching her lead, both nationally and in several swing states, but Republicans say three months remain for Trump to recover.

“This is a fight we still think is worth fighting. We just need Donald Trump to get on our page right now to make this thing happen,” Former RNC Chairman Michael Steele says.
