PALMER, Mass. (WWLP) – Five bomb threats and a threat of a school shooting, with at least one of those threats hitting each of the four schools located in Palmer, all within 30 days.

“I think it’s just gotten out of hand.  It’s crazy!  It’s got to stop,” said Robin Sullivan of Palmer.

Palmer is not alone in dealing with a rising number of school security threats.  Now, top safety officials in our state say there’s an increased number of school security threats happening throughout the commonwealth.

During the 2013-2014 school year the state police bomb squad was called in for 38 different bomb threats according to the Department of Fire Services statistics.  So far this school year, that number has nearly doubled.

The state’s fire marshal Stephen Coan has now joined in on a new proposed legislation that would require both public and private schools to call police and fire departments as soon as a threat is found

Pleasing Mike Lamberton, whose four young children have been rattled by the recent string of threats made at their schools in Palmer, “I think it gives parents more peace of mind, especially since I have four of them that are in the schools.  It would certainly give me more peace of mind that the police are aware of it and alerted to it.”

Massachusetts safety leaders say threats have continually gone up in numbers since both the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn.
