Sen. Lesser discusses importance of civic education to Longmeadow H.S. students

State Senator Eric Lesser taught a lesson in civics at Longmeadow High School Wednesday.

Senator Lesser is meeting with high schools students across western Massachusetts to explain the importance of civic education.

Senator Eric Lesser led the first of a series of High School Town Halls at Longmeadow High School Wednesday.

Senator Lesser answered students’ questions on state government and their civic education. The town hall is part of the state’s implementation of a new law that provides more funding to schools that incorporate civics in education.

“Whether it’s starting a committee getting the school board or just going out and knocking on doors we need to do what we can to advocate for what we believe in,” Thomas Coulouras told 22News.

Lesser told 22News, “Unfortunately a lot of public schools because of tight budgets and new curriculums, we crowded out civics and that was a mistake.”

Lesser said the new law will help high schools provide more learning based on experience and community service.

One goal would be to create voter registration drives. Under the new law, each high school student will be required to complete at least one civics project.
