News

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The 22News Storm Team declared a Severe Weather Alert Day for Thursday due to the expectation of heavy snow.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for all of western Massachusetts from 12:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday. A Winter Storm Warning is issued when 6″ or more of snow is expected within a 12-hour period, or 8″ or more in a 24-hour period.

Clouds will slowly increase after midnight, and there’s the chance for light snow before sunrise Thursday morning; temperatures will be in the 20’s.

We expect snow to arrive west to east from 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m., so be ready for snow to get heavier during the morning commute. The heaviest snow with this storm will happen from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., when snowfall rates will be 1-3 inches per hour.

Snow will begin to end west to east from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Plan on slow going and reduced visibility for much of the day on Thursday, and temperatures will be in the low to mid 20’s.

Friday will be dry, but there is the chance for more winter weather over the weekend.

Here is a look at our snowfall accumulation forecast. Make sure to follow the 22News Storm Team for the latest forecast and snowfall totals.
