Thieves are installing card skimmers at gas pumps in an attempt to steal your money.
As you unassumingly place your credit card in the reader, the software installed inside a skimming device can read and steal your financial information.
Some thieves even install cameras around the pump to capture you entering your pin number.
Springfield resident Javier Padilla told 22News that, because of the threat skimmers pose, he’s more comfortable paying inside.
“Give them my card, I’d rather swipe it there,” Padilla said. “Over here, all the things that I’ve seen, what happened, people getting ripped off, especially in the ATM. So I’m more comfortable going in there.”
Here are some ways to spot skimming devices:
- Inspect the card reader and the area near the PIN pad
- Avoid using your PIN
- Consider going inside to pay
- And keep an eye on your accounts
There’s also a software you can download to detect if a skimmer device is near you.
