NEW SALEM, Mass. (WWLP) – A small plane made an emergency landing Tuesday afternoon, on a sandbar in the Quabbin Reservoir.
According to State Police Media Relations, the call came in around 2:52 p.m. that a plane landed inside the Quabbin Reservoir. When troopers from the Belchertown Barracks arrived, they found the pilot, a 42-year-old Rhode Island man, was not injured and the plane was intact.
The pilot reported engine problems prior to landing in the northern part of the reservoir, near New Salem, State Police said. The plane is a Seawind with a 2015 fixed-wing, and a single-engine aircraft.
The State Police Air Wing spotted the plane, which landed upright and on its wheels. A State Police boat was launched from Belchertown. Also, the Federal Aviation Administration was notified about the incident.
The investigation into the emergency landing is ongoing. Police were still working to remove the plane from the sandbar late Tuesday night.
