Southampton Police are warning residents about car break-ins in town

News

SOUTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Locking your car is your first defense against potential thieves.

Many drivers don’t do it and as a result have become victims of break-ins. One Southampton man told 22News his car was broken into three years ago on a night he forgot to lock the doors.

“You live in a safe town you don’t expect it to happen,” said Mark Manoogian. “And you just get complacent with your surroundings. I lock my car doors every night now.”

Southampton police received reports of several overnight car break-ins last week in the Pleasant Street and East Street area of town. Now they’re urging residents to make sure their car doors are locked every night.

Car break-ins are unfortunately very common, but there are steps you can take to prevent a thief from taking valuables from your car. And it starts with ensuring your car doors are locked.

Experts recommend:

  • Locking the car doors and closing the windows
  • You can purchase an anti-theft security system, like a window alarm
  • Parking your car in well-lit areas
  • Keeping valuables out of plain sight

If you see any suspicious behavior in your neighborhood, you should call the police.
