Spending for wedding gifts can be expensive

(CNN) – Weddings are meant to be beautiful expressions of love, but if you’re a guest, these celebrations can be expensive.

According to a national survey from RetailMeNot and Kelton Global, the average cost of a wedding gift can approach $200, depending on your relationship to the bride and groom.

Before walking down the aisle, brides must consider a couple of things. Of course, you need the perfect shoes, as demonstrated by Disney’s Cinderella. You must plan a beautiful ceremony, hopefully not the kind the Princess Bride showed us. Also, who can forget the father-daughter dance from the Godfather.

Requirements for the guests aren’t as set in stone. Once you get that big invite, plan to spend some money.

According to a RetailMeNot and Kelton Global survey, 41% of invited guests give a gift, regardless of if they go to the wedding or not.

If it is an immediate family member, those polled say they will spend more, on average $195. For a friend, the budget is on average $89. If it is a coworker getting married, those surveyed say they’ll spend a little less, about $63.

According to Sara Skirboll, Shopping and Trends Expert with RetailMeNot.com, “The times are definitely changing when it comes to gift giving. And while, yes, the couple definitely puts together a registry for a reason, there are a lot of couples who really would prefer cash.”

To save you some cash, share a hotel room, or split the cost of a bigger gift with a couple of people. That way, you can enjoy the wedding without emptying your wallet.
