Sportsstuff shutting its doors after 30 years in business

News

After 28 years of business at the Springfield X, Sportsstuff will be closing its doors.

Owners David and Toni Trehy told 22News that instead of renewing the lease, they will be going into retirement after almost three decades at the store.

Sportsstuff is a locally owned sporting goods store that first opened in 1990 and has been at the X ever since, offering everything from t shirts to cleats.

The Trehy’s said that the increase in online shopping has made it difficult for the store to remain competitive. Toni added that the customers are one of the things she’ll miss most about the business.

“We’ve had people come in who were children themselves and now they bring in their children,” Toni said. “We’ve made life-long friendships with some of these people we’ve met over the years.”

Sportsstuff will be offering special deals during their final months in business.

The store is scheduled to close at the end of May. There are not future plans in place for the building once the store closes.
