SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield Metro Area has been ranked as the second most dangerous in the Northeast.
The Springfield Metro Area includes all of Hampden and Hampshire Counties. Most of the violent crime numbers come from Springfield, which has been ranked the sixth most dangerous city with a population under 200,000.
Denovi Denson of Springfield told 22News, “I think it’s awful all these young kids out here just killing one another and there’s nobody to protect them.”
The rankings were comprised by the Law Street Media Group, which analyzed FBI numbers for metro areas and cities across the nation. Springfield has had 9 homicides this year, but there have also been numerous shootings and other violent crimes.
Just after midnight Wednesday there was a shooting right behind the Rebecca M. Johnson elementary school in Springfield’s Bay Neighborhood. Not far away from their playground, there’s still blood caked on the ground.
A 35-year-old man was riding his bike home when two men demanded he give them his bicycle.
He refused, one of the men pulled a gun, there was a struggle, and the gun went off.
The victim’s at the hospital, but is expected to survive.
One woman, who wanted hide her identity, told 22News she thinks the city could do more to protect residents.
“You know I grew up in here to have it be the crime so high. It’s really embarrassing to the city of Springfield, it’s embarassing to me. Someone asks where you live, Springfield you know. So they so the murder area or the crime area which is pretty embarassing.”
