Springfield Police arrest “known car breaker” riding a bike

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield Police arrested a man, whom they say is a known car breaker, early Sunday morning.

Sergeant John Delaney told 22News officers set up surveillance looking for car breakers in the Stockbridge Court area at 11:30 p.m. Saturday night. At 12:20 a.m. officers saw a suspicious person casing out cars while riding a mountain bike.

Officers observed the suspect travel back and forth checking out one vehicle. He hopped off his bike and broke into the car and stole a back pack containing a laptop PC, according to Delaney.

Officers arrested the suspect, Cristian Mercado, 21 of Springfield, as he sped down Stockbridge Street on his bike, said Delaney.Charges:

  • B&E M/V Nighttime for a felony
  • Larceny over $250
