Springfield police arrested two Springfield men on drug and gun charges Wednesday night.

Springfield police spokesman Ryan Walsh said both 18-year-old Marcus Johnson and 19-year-old Alan Cerdena face several charges.

Walsh said officers were patrolling in the area of Dawes Street when they observed a vehicle operating without a license plate attached. Officers located a license plate stuffed into the rear roof area of the car, which wasn’t readable through the rear windshield and was not currently assigned to any motor vehicle.

The driver, identified as Cerdena, refused to stop for police. He accelerated down Dawes Street towards Bay Street near children who were playing near the road, creating a dangerous situation, according to Walsh.

Cerdena then struck a curb, which caused the airbags to deploy. Both Cerdena and Johnson refused medical treatment, said Walsh.

Inside the vehicle, officers found a loaded firearm and neither person has a license to carry, said Walsh.

During a search of Johnson, officers located 37 bags of heroin and crack-cocaine. Another bag of heroin was found in the vehicle, said Walsh.

Johnson also had an open case for illegal possession of a firearm without a license and possession of ammunition and was currently on probation, said Walsh.
